Book Summary

Black Girls UP! is the first book by Dina Walker, the founder and CEO of BLU Educational Services and BLU Educational Foundation. The book is a practical and personal guide to harnessing the power of Black girls of all ages. Black Girls UP! is unapologetically centered on the elevation of Black girls, not only because the author is a Black woman and mother, but also because Black girls are so often overlooked, underserved, and unfortunately harmed by the broader American society, as research clearly shows.

Black Girls UP! is a series of sixteen interconnected essays/chapters, each focused on a key aspect of the Black girl’s developmental experiences with the objective of elevating every aspect of her person so she can achieve her full potential in her family, her community, her nation and her world.

Each essay explores a particular topic of personal development, and outlines a series of approaches, explanations, exercises, experiences – some personal – which amplify the message of each chapter, as well as illustrative references: song lyrics, biblical scriptures, and words of wisdom. It also provides relevant resources and support materials for further examination and exploration.
